Roland Rydstrom lives in Anchorage, Alaska, and recently had unexpected guests. Last week, a mother moose and her two young came to her garden. In case that wasn’t enough, they really liked their lawn and decided to spend the day there.
The hatchlings were testing everything from the chairs to the doors, and when they decided the area was safe, they huddled together and took a nap. At one point, their mother fed them. Rydstrom photographed the family from inside his home, and when they left, he uploaded the photos to the internet. They went viral right away, proving that people needed to see something so innocent and adorable in these tough times.

When Rydstrom saw the moose and raised the blinds to get a better look at them, the animals didn’t even notice. I went to look for the Flat Stanley that my cousins sent me from Iowa. I promised them and their school that I would take a photo of Flat Stanley with the moose in my garden, but in the 3 months that I had been working at home, no I was at home when the moose came, something very common. I had taken him on excursions, but until now I had no luck with the moose photos. ”
“I took the pictures of the moose with Flat Stanley, and a few without it, and then I got to work. He really believed that the moose would be gone sometime, but every time he looked, they were still there. I could see them directly from my work area. I was very distracted and had fun while editing videos of my work with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. During the day, while the moose moved around, or took walks, went back to the window or looked out the door for more photos. They ignored me most of the time (although their ears were up most of the time, so they were obviously alert).
The Alaska elk is the state’s official mammal, living in between 175,000-200,000 of them.
In this type of moose, males are 40% heavier than females. The male moose can reach 2.1 meters to the shoulders and weigh more than 635 kilos. However, the female is 1.8 meters tall and weighs about 478 kilos. This makes the Alaska moose the largest member of the deer family and the largest moose in the world.
It is not easy to maintain such a physique. Although elk are herbivores, they need to eat in large quantities each day. In summer, for example, they eat 33 kilos of food a day, and in winter, more than 15.
The moose was in Rydstrom’s garden most of the day, from before 9 in the morning until almost 7 in the afternoon. “They took 2 quick walks around the neighborhood, but they quickly returned to their place in the garden. As you can see from the photos, most of the time they were just resting there. A neighbor reported that he had seen this same elk family running alongside the highway early this morning, just a few miles from the neighborhood. If I had made videos before, it would show that the particular mother was breathing heavily. They needed to rest, and I think they thought it safe to do so here in our garden

The young spent a lot of time lying together. It was lovely to see them there, moving toward the sun as the day wore on.
Rydstrom was right not to go out to take photos of the moose family that visited him. They are generally not aggressive but can become incredibly dangerous when provoked. A female moose will not think twice about attacking a person if she thinks it threatens her young.
According to the family of moose, they came and went from the garden, they nibbled plants, and in the case of the young, the patio furniture and the decoration of the garden, and the neighbor too, just like the babies, taking everything to their mouths. In fact, the neighbor began to turn the decorative lights in the garden on and off, trying to scare the young, who were trying to eat a light bulb, afraid that the glass would break in their mouth and they would hurt themselves. The mother loved eating my begoñas and those of the neighbor, as well as the leaves of the trees, the astilbes and the leaves of the Mexican orange tree. He also likes bleeding heart flowers, which had just bloomed, but I was lucky and didn’t eat them.
Unfortunately, Roland was on the phone when the most exciting thing happened, and he has no photos or videos of it. “Another moose and its young ran through the garden almost at the end of the day. I heard them running, but I couldn’t record them running across the other elk family that was resting. The mother and calves from my photos got up and ran after them, so there were 2 moose and 4 calves running through the gardens. And at the time I was telling a friend on the phone.
Nothing like this had happened before in Roland’s garden. As he said, moose sometimes visit him, but nothing more. “Usually they just walk through the garden and nibble on plants and trees or play with the neighbor’s sprinklers. A few years ago we believed that a mother was going to give birth in the place where today they were resting in the photos. She spent several hours lying in the sun breathing hard as she stretched out her legs. But it was a false alarm, she had twins that same night, across the street. ”
Roland’s partner, Cathy, recounted this on Facebook, and also that she has been living in Alaska since 1976 and had never seen anything like it in her garden, even though she lived much closer to the mountains before. “It happens to others all the time, we were lucky this time.
